Welcome to Jackamazoo Lino and Woodcut Prints

and hello from me, Ian Jackson, the artist behind Jackamzoo prints.

My work is an eclectic mixture of wildlife, natural history and whimsical fantasy subjects.  I mainly work in the traditonal techniques of lino and woodcutting.

Linocut Printing

Linocut printing, also known as linoleum block printing, is a printmaking technique that involves carving an image into a piece of linoleum (a type of material made from linseed oil, cork dust, and wood flour) and then using that carved block to make prints.

The process of linocut printing starts with the artist drawing a design on the linoleum block, which is then carved away using knives or gouges. The uncarved areas of the block will hold the ink and create the print when it is applied to paper and pressed. The linocut print is made by applying ink to the surface of the linoleum block and then pressing the block onto the paper, transferring the ink onto the paper.

Linocut printing is known for its bold, graphic quality and the ability to create large, striking images. It is a simple and accessible printmaking method that can be done at home with basic tools and materials. The process is often used for creating original prints, illustrations, posters, and cards.

Woodcuts

Woodcut printing is a form of relief printing that involves carving an image into a block of wood and then using the block to make prints. It is one of the oldest forms of printmaking and dates back to at least the 8th century.

In woodcut printing, the artist draws a design on a block of wood and then removes the areas around the design using knives, chisels, or gouges. The remaining raised areas of the block will hold the ink and create the print when it is applied to paper and pressed.

Woodcut prints are known for their bold, graphic quality and their ability to produce strong, simple images. They are often used for creating illustrations, posters, and book prints. The process of woodcut printing is relatively simple and accessible, making it a popular form of printmaking for artists of all skill levels.
